The Sohna Road metro may notrun on Sohna Road at all.

RITES' proposed 17.09 km metro from Bhondsi to Gurugram Railway Station was drawn up to run along the Sohna Road highway. Weak ridership projections on that stretch are now pushing planners toward Golf Course Extension Road and the interior sectors instead. Here's what's actually confirmed, and what a buyer on either corridor should watch next.

    What's actually on the table.

Sohna Road's biggest infrastructure complaint has always been the same: no direct metro. Residents of Bhondsi, Badshahpur, and the sectors strung along NH 248A rely entirely on road transport through two of Gurugram's most congested junctions, Subhash Chowk and Rajiv Chowk. A metro line here has been discussed since around 2020, when GMDA's Comprehensive Mobility Management Plan (CMMP), prepared by the School of Planning and Architecture, Delhi, first listed a Bhondsi–Railway Station corridor as a Phase 3 priority.

It moved from concept to paperwork through 2025. HMRTC's board approved the corridor in August 2024, and a tender for the detailed project report (DPR) went out to consultants on March 19, 2025, under reference HMRTC/DPR/2025/20. RITES India Ltd won that mandate and submitted a preliminary report on January 23, 2026, confirming a tentative alignment running largely along Sohna Road itself.

Then, in mid-June 2026, Hindustan Times reported that officials are reconsidering that alignment. Ridership projections on the direct highway stretch came in weaker than expected. GMRL and HMRTC are now studying three alternate route variations that swing the line inward, through Golf Course Extension Road and the dense residential sectors around it, rather than tracking the highway end to end.

    Context

Why planners are second-guessing a route they'd already approved.

A metro line running straight down a highway looks obvious on paper, but ridership models don't reward a straight line, they reward density along it. Sohna Road's direct stretch moves a lot of through-traffic that isn't getting off at a station. The CMMP's own forecast put peak demand on this corridor at 23,060 passengers per hour per direction, comfortably in mass-transit territory, but planners now believe that number is easier to hit by routing through interior sectors where people actually live and work: Sector 65, Sector 67, the M3M Urbana Chowk stretch, and Golf Course Extension Road, rather than the open highway.

There's a second unresolved question sitting underneath this one: whether the line gets built elevated or underground. In late January 2026, GMRL officials told a GMDA review meeting the corridor couldn't go underground because of cost and land constraints, making elevated the only realistic option. By late June 2026, a senior GMRL official was quoted saying some stretches may need to go underground precisely because they pass through Gurugram's busiest roads. Both statements are on record. Neither has been resolved. That tells you the DPR itself, not just the route, is still being actively shaped.

What the revised alignment actually touches

Golf Course Extension Road and Sectors 65/67 gain a metro line that Sohna Road itself may lose.

RITES' draft alignment, as reported by Magicbricks on June 19, 2026, starts at Bhondsi and runs through Mohan Nagar, Power Colony, Badshahpur, Sector 67, M3M Urbana Chowk, Sector 65, Golf Course Extension Road, Fresco Square, South City-II, Sector 47, Bakhtawar Chowk, Medanta Hospital, Mini Secretariat, Sadar Bazar, and Sector 8, before terminating at Gurugram Railway Station with an interchange to the Old Gurugram Metro at Sector 5.

That's a meaningfully different corridor from "a metro on Sohna Road." Bhondsi and Badshahpur, at the southern end, are still on the route, which keeps a future Sohna town extension possible; a minister raised that idea in February 2026, though it remains unconfirmed and depends entirely on this DPR being finalised first. But the stretch of Sohna Road between Rajiv Chowk and Sohna Chowk, the part most residents actually meant when they said "we need a metro," isn't guaranteed a direct line in any of the three variations currently under study.

Interior sectors are the near-term winners

Magicbricks reports demand already rising for flats in Sector 65 and Sector 67, and for land near Bhondsi and Badshahpur, on the back of this realignment news, even before the DPR is finalised.

Sohna Road's core stretch is the open question

If you own or are evaluating property specifically for highway-facing Sohna Road access rather than the interior sectors, this is the story to track before the alignment locks.

Original alignment vs the route under review.

Nothing here is final. This is what's changed between January 2026's preliminary report and the discussion GMRL and HMRTC are having now.

Should this change a decision you're making right now? An honest answer.

Only if you're weighing two specific corridors against each other. Otherwise, it's worth tracking, not acting on yet.

Why this is worth watching closely
    • This isn't a rumour. It sits on an approved CMMP, a board-cleared corridor, and a live DPR tender with a public reference number
    • It directly affects two of Gurugram's most active corridors: Sohna Road and Golf Course Extension Road
    • The interior-sector case is backed by an actual ridership number (23,060 PPHPD), not just planner preference
    • Bhondsi and Badshahpur stay on the route in every version discussed so far
    Why you shouldn't overreact
    • GMRL itself calls the current alignment provisional. Two more variations are still being scored
    • Elevated vs underground isn't settled, and that choice affects cost, timeline, and which stretches even qualify
    • There's no DPR completion date, funding decision, or construction start yet
    • A metro announcement, even a confirmed one, has historically moved Gurugram prices on construction milestones, not on planning news

    Rashmi's take

This is exactly the kind of story that gets flattened into a WhatsApp forward.

By the time this news reaches a broker's status update, it's become "Sohna Road is getting a metro!" That's not quite what's happening. The line might not run on Sohna Road at all. And that distinction matters a lot depending on which side of that highway your property actually sits.

I don't think this is a reason to rush a decision either direction. If you're already looking at Golf Course Extension Road or the Sector 65/67 belt, this is a genuine tailwind, one grounded in an official mobility plan, not a builder's brochure. If you're specifically counting on highway-facing Sohna Road access, don't assume it's coming. Track the DPR, not the headline.

If you're weighing property on either side of this corridor, message me. I'll walk you through exactly what's confirmed, what's still a proposal, and how I'd think about timing it.

    Frequently asked questions.

Is the Bhondsi metro definitely skipping Sohna Road?
Not confirmed either way. As of July 2026, GMRL and HMRTC are studying three route variations, and the interior-sector alignment through Golf Course Extension Road and Sectors 65/67 is one of them. The original Sohna Road-hugging alignment was RITES' preliminary proposal from January 2026, not a locked design.
How long is the proposed corridor and how many stations does it have?
17.09 km with 17 proposed stations in the current draft, running from Bhondsi village to Gurugram Railway Station, with an interchange to the Old Gurugram Metro at Sector 5. Both figures come from the GMDA CMMP and the HMRTC DPR tender document.
When will the final route be decided?
No confirmed date. RITES is still finalising the DPR, and even the construction type, elevated versus underground, is unresolved as of June 2026. HMRTC, GMRL, and GMDA are expected to meet to assess ridership, carriageway space, and cost before locking the alignment.
Will Sohna town itself ever get metro connectivity?
Possibly, but it's a separate, unconfirmed idea. A state minister mentioned a future Bhondsi-to-Sohna extension in February 2026, but said it depends entirely on the DPR and feasibility study for this corridor being completed first.
Which areas benefit most if the interior alignment is chosen?
Based on the draft route, Sector 65, Sector 67, the M3M Urbana Chowk stretch, and Golf Course Extension Road would get direct stations. Bhondsi and Badshahpur remain on the route in every version currently being studied.
